Located at a natural entrance into the Black Hills, ‘Hay Camp,’ was the original name of modern Rapid City when it was founded in 1876. Founded by a group of somewhat discouraged gold prospectors, ‘Hay Camp’ was laid out in a mile-square grid and later advertised as the ‘Gateway to the Black Hills.’ Today, from those small beginnings, Rapid City has grown to include almost 80,000 people and almost 55 square miles.
