Impact Cares in Skiatook: Where Hope Meets Hard Work
From tornadoes to torrential rain, microbursts to fierce winds, the weather in Skiatook, Oklahoma, keeps you on your toes. But even in the face of unpredictable skies and storm damage, the spirit of the community stands strong—and Impact Cares was honored to be part of it.
Our project began Monday, March 17, with eager hearts and willing hands. Right away, we were struck not only by the storm-damaged homes, but by the resilience and kindness of the people who live here. One of our first acts of service was helping clean up debris from a microburst that had taken down fences and skirting. We weren’t alone. The community’s Maintenance Technician—well-loved and respected—was out on a Sunday night picking up pieces and moving fences out of the road. He didn’t clock out when the storms rolled in; he leaned in. His example set the tone for the week.
Throughout our time in Skiatook, we had the privilege of meeting remarkable residents and partnering with a phenomenal team. One of our favorite moments came when we built a new deck for a retired grandmother who selflessly gives her time to babysit children of single mothers, mow lawns, and care for the sick. She’s the kind of neighbor everyone wishes they had—and now, she has a safe and sturdy deck to enjoy with her grandkids.
Another resident had lived in the community for 24 years but was limited by a hazardous deck with steep stairs. Despite dealing with chronic back issues, her quiet kindness shone through. With a new ramp and deck, she can now enjoy the outdoors and connect more easily with neighbors.
Then there was a woman who had experienced deep personal loss, including storm damage to her shed and cherished keepsakes. We were able to replace her rotted deck—and even more importantly, spend time with her, laugh, and see a glimmer of joy return to her face.
Our team came from all over—Albuquerque, Durango, Cheyenne, Kearney, and more. On Friday, the weather was manageable, but Saturday brought fierce winds and sheets of rain. Branches flew and safety came first, but even in the downpour, our team pressed on: skirting homes, cleaning yards, and even leveling a house.
One special resident, a grandmother, had just returned from the hospital after a long night with her 3-year-old granddaughter battling cancer. We were able to create a covered outdoor space with carpet so her granddaughter could safely play outside. Her joy lit up the rainy day.
We also encountered a resident known in the community for her frustration and complaints. She had a long list of needs, and we took the challenge: a new porch and steps. As we worked, her demeanor shifted, and we hope our kindness made a lasting impression.
In total, we completed 54 improvements on 27 homes—thanks in large part to the hard work and insight of the part-time Maintenance Technician who worked side-by-side with us every day.
Skiatook, whose name comes from the Osage word "Tséka’tuk" meaning “big foot,” is a small town with a big heart. With a population of about 8,000, it blends the charm of close-knit neighborhoods with the beauty of nearby Skiatook Lake. But what sets it apart most is its people: generous, strong, and proud of their community.
Impact Cares is grateful to have walked alongside the residents of Skiatook—building, listening, laughing, and making a difference, one project at a time. We leave with tired muscles, full hearts, and new friendships that remind us why we do what we do.
